Second Grade Class

WELCOME TO SECOND GRADE!

Atmosphere
Second grade is an exciting year!  The students are becoming better readers and building on skills they've learned in Kindergarten and First Grade.  They also learn all sorts of new things!

Faith
In second grade, we start every day with a devotion.  After our devotion, we also "put on" the full Armor of God so we are ready for our day and any struggle we may come up against.  We have daily prayers in an effort to grow in our faith lives.  We also attend chapel once a week as an entire school.

Curriculum

Our curriculum covers a wide variety of subject material in keeping with the Louisiana State Standards and much more.

Religion: Voyages by Concordia Publishing House – We start out the year in the Old Testament learning about Creation.  Throughout the year we learn the stories of Biblical characters in both the Old and the New Testaments and how God's messages then are still applicable to our lives today.

Reading: Trophies by Harcourt – covers a variety of skills including reading for fluency, grammar, writing, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Math: Saxon – includes mastery of addition and subtraction facts; furthering skills such as time, fractions, and measurement. New computation and mathematical skills are also introduced.

Phonics: Saxon – connects phonemic skills with spelling skills.  The students learn how to spell and read using phonetic techniques.

Language: Harcourt – focuses on sentences, different kinds of nouns, different kinds of verbs, adjectives, and writing for various purposes.

Science: Harcourt – includes Life Science (plants, animals, people, habitats), Earth Science (the Earth, the Solar System, weather), and Physical Science (matter, forces, motion, sound).

Social Studies: Scott Foresman – explores communities, our Earth, working together, our country today and long ago, and people and places in history; while emphasizing different map and geography skills.

Handwriting: Zaner-Bloser – focuses on strengthening manuscript during the first semester and introduces cursive in the second semester.

Enrichment Classes
Each day of the week the students experience a different enrichment class: Physical Education, Music, Computer, Library, and Art.  In addition, they are taught basic Spanish vocabulary one day a week.

Behavior
During the first week of school, the class as a whole brainstorms the classroom rules that will be in place all year long.
We follow a basic color system (green, yellow, red). Each child starts the day on green and gets one verbal or nonverbal warning.  After that, the child must change their color and receive a consequence for misbehavior.
Communication
A newsletter goes home every Friday, detailing the tests, homework, and material we will be learning during the next week.  The newsletter also lists the spelling words, vocabulary words, and memory work for the week.  Parents are welcome to contact me via phone, note, or e-mail with any questions, comments, or concerns.
